Community
Scholars have found that bureaucrats and developers choose communities they consider lacking in cohesion when they decide where to place messy projects like power plants and big airports.  Powerful government and big business players in Eastern Massachusetts figured that the people of Greenfield and Franklin County would not pull together, question or resist siting a wood burning power plant in our valley.

They got it wrong, but we'll have to work hard to prove it to the officials and powerbrokers who want us to live with their big plans for years to come.

Citizens of Greenfield have a very special role to play in preserving the Valley's air, water, forests and community.  You have a voice in local government and can ask your mayor, town council members, zoning board and others to help stop the biomass plant.

We all can write to our State representatives and newspapers about how we want to preserve our quality of life here.  We can talk to our friends and educate them, and ourselves, about ways to stop this plant from being built.

Negative economic impacts associated with the biomass burner.

Light industry, the backbone of Greenfield's Industrial Park, may shy away from siting near a major air and noise polluter.

The impact of a biomass burner on residential real estate values is uncertain.

Higher rates of respiratory illness associated with biomass burner-produced particulate and volatile organic compound emissions may result in increased medical costs for area residents.
